Floating saunas, one on the river, one on the lake

saunoa /ˈsau̯.no.ɑ/ · verb, Finnish

A Verb, Not a Place

Saunoa (SOW-no-ah) is the Finnish verb for to sauna. It means the act itself, not the room, and that shaped how we built this place.

In Ottawa the sauna floats on the Ottawa River beside the NCC River House, with an enclosed river plunge and open water access. In Toronto it sits on the harbourfront with the CN Tower over your shoulder and a plunge tub on the deck.

Couples, friends, teams and first-timers all welcome. Bring a swimsuit and two towels, and you will leave with your shoulders an inch lower.

Moored beside the NCC River House on the Ottawa River, with forest on the far shore and docks out front. The cold plunge is an enclosed river plunge, and there is open water access if you want to go straight into the river. Changerooms on site, plus access to the NCC River House.

Heat, Cold, Rest. Repeat.

Three temperatures, cycled as many times as feels right. Most people get through two or three rounds in a 90-minute session.

  1. 01

    Heat

Ten to fifteen minutes in the cedar sauna at 85 to 95°C. Throw water on the stones for löyly, the wave of steam that follows.

  2. 02

    Cold

Thirty seconds to two minutes in the plunge. The first few seconds are the hard part. After that it gets easier every time.

  3. 03

    Rest

Five to ten minutes on the deck while your body reheats from the inside. This is the part most people skip and the part that does the work.

Bring a swimsuit and two towels: one to sit on in the sauna, feet included, and one for after the plunge. No experience needed.
